Sowing the seed, Macedonia

Evangelical Library, Colombo, Sri Lanka Difficult times call for innovative responses

Back in June we brought you news from Macedonia recipient Aleksandar ‘Sasha’ Vuletic. Sasha and his team have been ministering to those in need throughout the lockdown. We never cease to be amazed at the different, innovative ways that our recipients reached their communities before and during in-country lockdowns and the Trinitas Church are a great example.

A couple of months ago, when Sasha and his wife Maria were visiting their local market, they noticed that someone had put a bookshelf in the central part of the shopping mall, in order for people to freely share books and magazines. The idea was that once the books had been read and enjoyed, they could be returned to the mall, together with a new book, for others to borrow.

Maria felt that God was reminding her that this was a great opportunity in this time of distress to “bring the seed of God’s word to the people from our neighbourhood and community”. So, from Monday to Friday (as at weekends they were in lockdown) Maria and Sasha took evangelistic books, Bibles, children’s Bibles and other Christian material to the shopping centre. Here, they put them on display so shoppers could easily notice them.

Even during the first few minutes of putting them on the shelves, people were waiting for Sasha and Maria to finish their work in order to take books, not only for themselves but also for family members and neighbours.

Sasha and Maria left information on how they could be contacted and how they could learn about all the local churches nearby.

“People are hungry and looking for answers”, explains Sasha, “this is an opportunity for the church to sow the seed of the Gospel in every way it can. I shared this experience with pastors and leaders from other churches in Skopje and Macedonia so that they also can use this unique opportunity to share free books, Bibles and Gospel news in their community. So far, we have distributed more than 1000 printed materials.”
