Global Book Shipments Update

Inspiration for India from Los Olmos Prison, South America

A recent message from Pastor Swamy in India has reminded us how God can use a single story to encourage believers across continents. The pastor wrote to the Trust after receiving a recent mailing. Among the resources we sent him were copies of our Gospel of Mark Small Group Training and Leaders' Handbook. One story in particular left a lasting impression.

The Leaders' Handbook includes the extraordinary account of revival in Los Olmos Prison in Argentina, a place once infamous for violence, murder and occult practices, but transformed through the power of the Gospel.

Pastor Swamy shared this story with his congregation, and the response was overwhelming.

"The story of the transformation at Los Olmos prison, from the Book of Mark's Gospel Leaders Handbook, was so powerful. All our pastors, leaders and the church were so powerfully touched and challenged to stand for the Lord, and keep on sharing Gospel. Thanks to you for sending the beautiful books. Blessings."

Evangelical Library, Colombo, Sri Lanka It is a wonderful reminder that God's Word knows no borders. A testimony from South America, shared through a resource produced by the Trust, has encouraged and inspired believers thousands of miles away in India.

From a prison of fear to a prison of hope

The remarkable story began in the mid-1980s when Pastor Juan Zuccarelli sensed God calling him into prison ministry in Buenos Aires. Although he had previously led evangelistic crusades, he had never imagined serving behind prison walls.

The only way to gain regular access, he was told, was to become a prison guard. Despite hoping God might redirect him elsewhere, Juan applied. What should have taken eight months was approved within a week.

Convinced that God had opened the door, he accepted the post with one purpose: to share the Gospel.

His first evangelistic meeting inside Los Olmos Prison attracted around 300 inmates, and 100 gave their lives to Christ. Their decision came at a great cost. The new believers suffered abuse and persecution from other prisoners, prompting Juan to seek a safe place where they could grow in their faith together.

In 1987, after much persistence, prison officials allowed the Christians to renovate an abandoned, fire-damaged cell block. Twenty-one prisoners transformed it with their own hands, creating a place dedicated to prayer, Bible study and worship.

The change was extraordinary. The renovated block eventually expanded across the entire floor of the prison, once known as the "Elephant's Floor," where the most dangerous criminals were housed. It had even contained an altar dedicated to Satan. Through prayer, discipleship and faithful witness, what had once symbolised darkness became a place where Christ was openly worshipped.

Today, the Christian community at Los Olmos has grown to 24 cell blocks, with around 1,600 prisoners coming to faith in Christ. The impact did not stop there. Believers from Los Olmos were sent as missionaries to other prisons, helping establish Christian communities throughout the prison system. As new prisons opened, government authorities increasingly invited experienced Christian prisoners and leaders from Los Olmos to help lay strong spiritual foundations.

Over time, churches were established in all 40 prisons across the province. The transformation was so significant that the government later entrusted Juan Zuccarelli with establishing an entirely Christian prison.

He appointed Daniel Tajeda, a young evangelical Christian prison officer who, despite being 96th in line for promotion, was selected because of his integrity and faithfulness.

Beginning with just ten prisoners, the prison steadily grew and became known by a remarkable name: Christ, the Only Hope

This inspiring account, reproduced with permission from the Renewal Journal (August 2020), continues to encourage believers around the world.

As Pastor Swamy's testimony reminds us, a single story of God's transforming power can travel across continents, strengthening pastors, equipping leaders and inspiring churches to continue faithfully sharing the Gospel.
